10 Tips to Overcome Writer’s Block  If you are a regular blogger (or trying to be), one of the problems you will face sooner or later is writer’s block. This used to be an age old term for people writing books or newspaper journalists, but now writers in the online world are often facing the doomed writer’s block.  The problem with most people is they will accept it and not do anything about it. Writer’s block is your mind playing tricks on you – don’t let it beat you.

Alyce Cowell writes the Westfield Insider blog.

The Fashion Blogs Beating Vogue At Online Influence Voguerecently won a Webby, but when it comes to online influence  fashion blogs are beating out the behemoth when it comes to links, social media  activity and general buzz.  Granted it’s the power blogs that consistently take the top spots in  our ranking of influential  fashion blogs; but using the exact same ranking criteria, bloggers are  edging out magazines who (often) have larger staffs and larger budgets when it  comes to influencing readers online.

The Social Studio…

Here at Fashion Bloggers Australia, we feel that it’s extremely important to help raise awareness to local charities or enterprises, especially those using fashion as the vehicle for which to drive it.

The Social Studio, in Melbourne, is one of these places.  Created in 2009 by a group of community members and local designers, The Social Studio has gone from strength to strength.

As quoted by the Social Studio:  “We are a fashion school, a designer clothing label, a café, and a community space created from the style and skills of the young refugee community. We are a social enterprise that champions the values of diversity, community, education, environmentally sustainable design and ethical business practices. We facilitate a range of projects that provide social support including legal advice, counselling, tutoring, driving and formal training in clothing production, retail and hospitality. We encourage community engagement through our café, regular public workshops, talks and events. This unique enterprise develops work and life skills in a highly motivating context and encourages young people to follow their aspirations”.

The Social Studio very kindly agreed to have a chat with me and show me around their establishment, and, as it’s the school holidays I had the company of my children!

Their studio is basically broken down into 4 seperate working area’s (including the cafe):

The retail area is at the front of the building and here you can purchase the beautifully made garments and jewellery:

At the back of the retail area is the manufacturing space where the garments are made:

The teaching area is upstairs, this is where the students learn their design and construction skills:

This digitally printed fabric screams “Christopher Kane!”

As my children had been extremely patient whilst I’d been wandering around snapping, I thought it only fair to shout them lunch in the cafe part of the studio.  We ordered, from the African Burger menu, Morroccan Vegie and Tofu Burgers.  The food was simply delicious, I would highly recommend it.  The “cutting table” is a long table in the centre of the cafe for people to sit at and dine:

The staff at the Social Studio were warm and welcoming, there was a passionate vibe filling the atmosphere, everybody seemed to love doing what they were doing.  If you’re passing, drop in for a browse or a coffee (or a burger!) and find out for yourself.

You can visit The Social Studio at:  128 Smith Street, Collingwood, Vic.

www.thesocialstudio.org

Or you can check out their Pop-Up Shop:

MELBOURNE CENTRAL

Lonsdale St, level 1 bridge, until September.

This is their first large-scale pop-up shop in Melbourne Central Shopping Centre. The glass-house will be home to regular workshops, events, their wonderful clothing collection and is providing new training and employment opportunities in retail for their team.  Keep an eye on the events page on their website for updates.

Behind a white sheer curtain sits Alice’s pattern making table, sewing machinery and lots […]
