The Social Studio very kindly agreed to have a chat with me and show me around their establishment, and, as it’s the school holidays I had the company of my children!
Their studio is basically broken down into 4 seperate working area’s (including the cafe):
The retail area is at the front of the building and here you can purchase the beautifully made garments and jewellery:
At the back of the retail area is the manufacturing space where the garments are made:
The teaching area is upstairs, this is where the students learn their design and construction skills:
This digitally printed fabric screams “Christopher Kane!”
As my children had been extremely patient whilst I’d been wandering around snapping, I thought it only fair to shout them lunch in the cafe part of the studio. We ordered, from the African Burger menu, Morroccan Vegie and Tofu Burgers. The food was simply delicious, I would highly recommend it. The “cutting table” is a long table in the centre of the cafe for people to sit at and dine:
The staff at the Social Studio were warm and welcoming, there was a passionate vibe filling the atmosphere, everybody seemed to love doing what they were doing. If you’re passing, drop in for a browse or a coffee (or a burger!) and find out for yourself.
You can visit The Social Studio at: 128 Smith Street, Collingwood, Vic.
Or you can check out their Pop-Up Shop:
Lonsdale St, level 1 bridge, until September.
This is their first large-scale pop-up shop in Melbourne Central Shopping Centre. The glass-house will be home to regular workshops, events, their wonderful clothing collection and is providing new training and employment opportunities in retail for their team. Keep an eye on the events page on their website for updates.
